Charley's Story
We are so honored and excited to introduce you to our September featured child, Charley Elise Considine. Charley is a beautiful and adorable 2 year old little girl who was born on, August 13, 2013. Mom Heather says that she was healthy and beautiful with 10 fingers and 10 toes, she was the happiest baby she had ever seen. She was perfect!
At 2 months old mom Heather started to think Charley was a little on the small side. So she asked her doctor and he said that she was fine, she may just be a small child. At 3 months old mom Heather was even more concerned and took her back to the doctors office and learned that, in fact that Charley had lost weight from her last visit. At this point the family begin to then start trying to figure out what was causing her weight loss. After many tests and scans they found a mass on her brain. Charley was flown to children's of Alabama in Birmingham. There they did a biopsy and on December 3, 2013 and she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Charley was diagnosed with "Pilocytic Astrrocytoma", and an extremely rare neurological disorder, "Diencephalic Syndrome", that causes tumors.
DIencephalic Syndrome is a very rare neurological disorder characterized by failure to thrive, abnormal thinness (emaciation), amnesia, intense sleepiness, unusual eye position and sometimes blindness. It is normally seen in infancy or early childhood but some cases have been reported in older children and even adults. Diencephalic syndrome is usually caused by a brain tumor such as a low-grade glioma or astrocytoma.
As a result of this Charley has completely lost her vision and is strictly tube fed. Gagging and nausea/ throwing up are constant issues for Charley and make it extremely difficult for oral feeding. Charley will gnaw on food but still instantly gags if she attempts to swallow the food. She recently had a brief break from chemotherapy, however a recent trip to her oncologist in Birmingham showed the tumors along her spine are growing again. Charley began another year of chemotherapy on August 3rd 2015. Charley's Mother is unable to work. Taking care of Charley is a full time job, however as Charley's mother Heather stated, it is an absolute pleasure to be home with my angel baby and her amazing big brother Elijah. Baby Charley has captured many hearts, including my own and has over 19,000 followers on her families Facebook page : Smiles For Baby Charley.
